Vizslas as grass eaters
If you’ve ever watched your dog intently munching on grass, you’re not alone. Here in Cork, my five-year-old Hungarian Vizsla, Phoebe, is a prime example of a canine who simply can’t resist a good patch of green. It’s a behavior that puzzles many of us, sparking questions and theories. So, let’s dig into the “why” behind this common doggy habit.
Is It an Upset Tummy or Something More?

The most popular theory you’ll hear is that dogs eat grass to induce vomiting when they have an upset stomach. And yes, sometimes this is exactly what happens. Phoebe has certainly had her moments where a quick grass snack was followed by a less-than-glamorous regurgitation. The idea is that the roughage tickles their throat, helping them clear whatever’s bothering them.
However, this doesn’t explain every grass-eating session. Often, Phoebe will happily munch away with no signs of nausea before or after. This leads us to other intriguing possibilities.
Are They Self-Medicating or Just Enjoying a Snack?
Could your dog be a secret nutritionist, seeking out vital elements missing from their diet? Some believe that dogs might be looking for fiber, vitamins, or trace minerals not adequately provided by their regular kibble. It’s a fascinating thought – that our pups instinctively know what their bodies need and turn to nature to get it.
Then there’s the simplest explanation: they just like it! Just like some humans enjoy a good salad, perhaps dogs simply find the taste or texture of grass appealing. Phoebe certainly seems to savor some blades, while others are devoured with a gusto that suggests pure enjoyment. It could be a form of boredom relief, a sensory experience, or just a quirky preference.
Phoebe’s Green-Eating Adventures (and Our Interventions!)
For Phoebe, grass eating is a daily ritual. While we usually let her indulge in small amounts, we do keep a watchful eye. Too much grass can certainly lead to an upset stomach, even if that wasn’t her original intention. Moderation is key to avoid a messy aftermath!
