As a proud Vizsla owner, there are unique quirks and joys that only fellow Vizsla enthusiasts understand. Here are 10 things that perfectly sum up life with these affectionate, energetic dogs—plus a few real-life moments from our adventures with Phoebe:

1. Unending Energy

Vizslas are legendary for their boundless energy. Whether it’s a brisk run, a hike, or an endless game of fetch, they live for movement. When play mode is activated, brace yourself—you’re not walking the dog, the dog is walking you (at warp speed).

We like to take Phoebe for a cycle around the local park. We clock about 10 kilometers. She? Easily 100, thanks to all the zigzagging, sprinting, and spontaneous squirrel detours. Then she crashes for the rest of the day like she just ran a marathon—because she basically did. One exhausted, very happy Vizsla.

2. Velcro Dogs

Vizslas love to be near their humans at all times. You might find your Vizsla, like my Phoebe, following you from room to room, laying at your feet, or giving you those big, soulful eyes requesting some cuddle time. They are truly “velcro dogs” and crave companionship.

3. Passionate Pursuers

If your Vizsla spots a squirrel, bird, or any moving object, be prepared for a sudden sprint! Their strong prey drive can make walks an adventure, as they practice their hunting skills.

4. Shedding and Cleaning

Vizslas have short coats, which means less grooming, but they do shed—oh boy, do they shed! Buffing the furniture and wearing fur-covered clothes become weekly routines for Vizsla owners. Just consider it an accessory! Places where to expect most hair: bed and car boot (if its where you transport them).

5. Sensitive Souls

These dogs are incredibly sensitive, both physically and emotionally. Yelling or harsh corrections can hurt their feelings. Positive reinforcement works wonders with Vizslas, and they thrive on praise and love. People often mention the t-rex phase when they are young. We found out positive reinforcement work best!

6. Swimmers at Heart

Vizslas are known for their love of water, and it’s easy to see why! Whether it’s splashing around in a lake, lounging by the pool, or frolicking in the ocean, getting wet brings them immense joy. Just be prepared for a friendly shower when your Vizsla shakes off after a swim—watch out for the splash zone! Take Phoebe, for example; she adores swimming in all types of water. She’s even dabbled in surfing! One of the best parts about swimming with her is that when she gets tired, she happily returns to our beach blanket and waits for us. We never have to worry about her wandering off—her loyalty is unwavering.

7. Food Enthusiasts

Vizslas aren’t just bursting with energy—they’re also enthusiastic food lovers! Many are expert-level counter surfers with an uncanny ability to sniff out snacks left unattended, so keeping food safely out of reach becomes a daily survival skill.

That said, eating habits can vary wildly among Vizslas. Take Phoebe, for instance—she’s no scavenger. She’s a picky little princess who turns her nose up at plain kibble unless there’s a food crisis. But mix in some beef or chicken? Now we’re talking.

Meanwhile, our friends’ Vizslas will happily spend 20 minutes foraging for kibble hidden among rocks, noses to the ground like it’s a gourmet treasure hunt. Phoebe? She’d take one look, roll her eyes (I swear she can), and wait for her à la carte platter to be served in a bowl, preferably with a garnish.

8. Intelligence and Mischief

These dogs are incredibly smart, which can lead to mischief if they’re bored! Keeping them mentally stimulated with training, puzzle toys, or interactive play is essential to prevent them from becoming little tornadoes in the house.

9. Training Champions

Because of their intelligence and eagerness to please, training a Vizsla can be a rewarding experience. They excel in obedience, agility, and other dog sports, often impressing everyone with their skills. Phoebe loves showing off what she can do!

10. Heartfelt Connections

Above all, Vizslas form deep bonds with their owners. They have an uncanny ability to sense your emotions and will be by your side through thick and thin. The affection, loyalty, and joy they bring into your life are priceless.
